Before
AfterHow much should it cost to repair a gutter?
The cost of repairing a gutter depends on what's wrong, what the gutter is made of, how high it is and how easy it is to reach. A single resealed joint on a bungalow is a small job, while re-fixing a sagging run on a three-storey house costs more.

Tip: a line or two more about the job (which side of the house, how long it's been happening, any tricky access) helps contractors quote accurately.
What decides the cost of a gutter repair?
Five things decide the cost of a gutter repair: the type of fault, the gutter material, the height of the gutter, access around the house, and whether anything behind the gutter, such as the fascia, also needs work. Contractors price each job from these details.
| Factor | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Type of fault | Resealing one joint is quicker than re-fixing a whole run |
| Material | Cast iron parts and painting take longer than uPVC |
| Height | Upper-storey gutters may need a tower or scaffold |
| Access | Conservatories, steps and sloping gardens slow the work |
| Fascia condition | Rotten fascias must be repaired before brackets can hold |
Which gutter repairs are usually smallest?
The smallest gutter repairs are usually resealing or replacing a leaking joint, refitting a loose bracket, clearing and resealing an outlet, or reconnecting a downpipe that has come apart. These are often done in under an hour on a single-storey home, and can sometimes be added to a gutter clean.
Which repairs cost more?
Repairs cost more when a whole run has to be taken down and re-fixed, several sections need replacing, or the fascia board behind the gutter has rotted. Repairs to cast iron gutters, common on Victorian and Edwardian homes around Old Paignton and Polsham, also take longer, because joints need cleaning, sealing and repainting, and matching parts may need sourcing.
Does living near the sea affect repair costs?
Living near the sea can affect repair costs because salt in the air speeds up rust on metal brackets and screws. On homes close to the seafront in Paignton and Goodrington, a contractor may recommend replacing corroded fixings along the whole run, not just the one that failed, so the repair lasts. Ask whether stainless steel fixings are included.
When does replacement make more sense than repair?
Replacement makes more sense when leaks keep returning along the whole run, the plastic is brittle and cracking, or the metal is rusted through. Paying for repeated repairs can cost more than new guttering in the long run. See gutter replacement for what that involves.
How do you get an accurate repair quote?
Get an accurate repair quote by describing the problem clearly: where the leak or sag is, what the gutters are made of, how many storeys the house has and any access issues. Photos help too.
